There are some wonderful historic houses in the part of the country where I live most of the year. It is quieter round here these days – although in the civil war period, this was the hot bed of intrigue and political activity. The payment for services to the king was to be handed a vast plot of land and enough funds to build something fantastic. Fortunately many of these properties are still standing and are members of various heritage organisations. I for one enjoy driving out to nose around two or three every summer.
With these properties come some amazing gardens – often a tad more interesting than the actual house. Assuming Capability Brown hadn’t turfed out any design to make way for landscapes! Inspiring for our own little plots of peace, and just what a good garden designer would be able to conjur up on small scale – they have the expertise and experience.
